(Effect of blackcurrant anthocyanin intake on peripheral muscle circulation during typing work in humans)」と題する論文が掲載されました。

How Japanese keyboard Katakori led to two scientific breakthroughs that have led to global changes in how consumers appreciate the blackcurrant.
Important
I am neither a scientist nor a medical professional. This article addresses serious health aspects of human biology and I have summarised quite complex information. At the end of the article I list published scientific papers that give background and a full explanation to what I have written. If any of the information seems relevant to you please discuss directly with your own health professional. Please do not act on my article alone.
In Japan, severe chronic shoulder and neck stiffness caused by computer work or desk jobs is so common it has its own dedicated medical term: Katakori. In the early 2000s, Japanese researchers specifically targeted this "typing pool" issue using New Zealand Blackcurrant Anthocyanins (BCA).
This was visionary research and it has proven to be a landmark study in blackcurrant history: bridging the gap between traditional berry nutrition and functional occupational health. In 2005, a prominent Japanese peer-reviewed Journal, ‘Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry’ published a paper titled “Effect of blackcurrant anthocyanin intake on peripheral muscle circulation during typing work in humans”. The lead author of this study was the Japanese research group led by Dr Hitoshi Matsumoto. The work followed on from earlier research, again by Japanese scientists, on the use of New Zealand blackcurrant anthocyanins for eyesight issues.
The 'Katakori researchers' wanted to know if blackcurrants could stop typing fatigue at a structural level. They took 11 healthy subjects and put them through a rigorous trial: The subjects were subjected to a continuous, grueling **30-minute intermittent typing workload** designed explicitly to induce acute shoulder strain and stiffness. But instead of just asking how the typists felt, the scientists used advanced medical technology:
- * **NIRS (Near-Infrared Spectroscopy):** Placed on the shoulder to measure actual blood flow and oxygen levels inside the muscle tissues.
- * **EMG (Electromyography):** Sensors attached to the **trapezius muscle** (the main shoulder/neck muscle) to measure electrical activity and physical fatigue signals.
The study proved that typing pool shoulder strain is heavily caused by a drop in local blood circulation—the locked posture starves the muscle of oxygen. The blackcurrant extract actively countered this in four ways:
- Prevented Oxygen Drop:
- Reduced Muscle Fatigue (EMG):
- Reduced Physical Stiffness:
- Increased Resting Blood Flow:
In the placebo group, oxygenated hemoglobin levels in the shoulder plummeted during typing. In the blackcurrant group, the extract **significantly prevented this drop**, keeping the shoulder muscles oxygenated.
The electromyography readings showed that the electrical fatigue signals in the trapezius muscle were notably alleviated when taking the blackcurrants.
Hand-held tissue firmness measurements taken after the typing session confirmed that the blackcurrant group experienced significantly less physical muscle "locking" and post-work stiffness.
In a secondary test within the same study, a single dose of the extract boosted overall forearm blood flow by up to **1.26-fold** within 2 to 5 hours.
The conclusion was that New Zealand blackcurrant extract acts as a natural vasodilator (it relaxes blood vessels). By keeping the blood flowing freely into the trapezius muscle even while a person sits rigidly typing, it effectively flushes out metabolic waste and maintains oxygen levels, preventing *katakori* (shoulder strain).
I was working with the New Zealand blackcurrant industry at the time and an industry group met to discuss the relevance of this research. Our hypothesis was that, although the focus of the Japanese research was on Katakori, the research was equally relevant to athletes in virtually all sports.
The New Zealand blackcurrant marketer, Sujon Berryfruits, funded the use of blackcurrant extract by a number of New Zealand sports teams and sportspeople, and even the Denmark Olympic Ski team that were in New Zealand for their pre-Olympic training at the time. The results were anecdotally positive. This in turn led to one of the world’s leading sports scientists, Prof Mark Willems, UK Chichester University, researching the use of New Zealand blackcurrant extract for sports (especially cycling). I regard Professor Willems as 'the global science champion of the blackcurrant for athletic performance'. I have written about his work in previous articles for the JBA.
And now, in 2026, a team of researchers at the Jacksonville State University, in the USA, has taken sports-focussed research on New Zealand blackcurrants to the next level with an emphasis on ‘strength’ and ‘explosive energy’. My next article will focus on this wonderful new research.
in writing this article, and reading the Jacksonville research results as well, I can't help but think that an amazing opportunity exists for a marketer to develop a New Zealand blackcurrant retail product for e-gamers. These modern day ‘e-gamer sportspeople’ spend hours, sitting still and highly focussed on a screen. They can earn small fortunes on the global e-game stage. Explosive physical energy, quicker reactions, higher mental acuity and sustained focus, even better decision making (as proved in one research paper): an amazing commercial opportunity!
